The Database for Police Abolition (D4PA) is a database-in-progress tracking proposals under consideration by decision-makers that would: 1) Defund and disarm police departments, 2) Diminish the role of policing in communities, and 3) Empower alternative visions for public safety. The proposals are compatible with a view “towards the horizon of abolition,” and avoid contributing to the legitimacy of policing as an institution for community safety.

This event was co-sponsored by Critical Resistance, Project NIA, Survived and Punished, Reclaim the Block, and Black Visions Collective. Panelists K Agbebiyi, Woods Ervin, Mariame Kaba, Dean Spade, and Kamau Wilson gathered to discuss the current state of abolition and community safety work and to assess current proposals for reform and potential alternative solutions to press for as we move forward in this moment of pushback against police violence. During this time of rebellion against police terrorism and state violence, the Black Philly Radical Collective (a group of 12 organizations including Black Lives Matter Philly and Philly for Real Justice) has listed immediately actionable demands for the City of Philadelphia.

The experiences of women of color and transgender people of color are frequently excluded from advocacy against police brutality, which focuses primarily on the experiences and needs of black men, and advocacy against gender-based violence, which focuses primarily on the experiences and needs of white women. In using a holistic definition of street harassment that incorporates factors like real or perceived racial, ethnic, and/or religious identity, Collective Action for Safe Spaces (CASS) aims to elevate the voices and needs of women of color and transgender people of color in its work to address street harassment. By centering the most marginalized identities in our community, we are making public spaces safe for everyone.

This worksheet focuses in on the Coronavirus crisis in relation to the longstanding public health crisis of racialized policing, community divestment, and structural violence. It is an invitation to share ideas around these issues, and to consider what we can heal, dismantle, and create together in response.

In this period of astonishing energy and public discussion about the state of policing, detention, imprisonment, sentencing, and surveillance, CR is excited to release this new video series, Breaking Down the Prison Industrial Complex, as part of our Profiles in Abolition initiative. The videos explore the current state of the prison industrial complex (PIC) and how people are fighting back to resist and abolish it. As always, we feature abolition as a strategy to dismantle systems of harm and punishment in favor of systems that increase health, stability, and self-determination.

The killing of Black people at the hands of the police is taking place against the backdrop of a pandemic that is taking Black lives at an alarming rate. Our communities continue to be disinvested in and our people continue to be vulnerable to every harm in our society. This is why we call to defund police departments across the country and demand an investment of those resources into the needs of our communities.

We know what is happening in Minneapolis is a product of what has happened to Black people for decades. We are paying attention and we are ready to rise.
